The Active School Flag (ASF) is an award given to schools that are dedicated to creating a physically educated and active school community. The initiative encourages schools to increase physical activity and engage students in more frequent physical activities. To earn the ASF, schools start by assessing their current practices in three key areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity, and Partnerships. Additionally, they must organize an annual Active School Week and commit to making it a permanent part of their school calendar. Schools that meet all ASF criteria will be awarded the flag, which is valid for three years, after which they can reapply.
The ASF is an initiative by the Department of Education and Skills, supported by Healthy Ireland.
Why Be Active?
Did you know that four out of five children in the Republic of Ireland still don't get enough exercise, which poses significant health risks? Regular physical activity releases chemicals in the brain, like endorphins, which improve mood, while also benefiting the heart, lungs, muscles, and bones. It's also a great way to manage stress.
Health Benefits of Physical Activity for Children:
Improves agility, balance, and coordination
Increases energy levels
Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression
Enhances physical and mental well-being
Helps maintain a healthy weight
Boosts concentration
Improves self-esteem and overall mood
Encourages social connections and friendships
The benefits of this initiative for Kilsheelan NS have been tremendous, fostering a more positive attitude towards physical activity among students and creating a more active, engaged school community.
