Through our Student Council, Kilsheelan NS hopes to give our pupils a more active role in the organisation of our school and ensure they are listened to and respected for their ideas and concerns. Discussions in classes and at Student Council meetings help to develop social and learning skills in many areas including speaking and listening, problem solving, brainstorming and the decision-making process.
The role of the Student Council at Kilsheelan NS includes:
Providing a platform for pupils to express their opinions and suggest improvements in various aspects of school life.
Giving all pupils the opportunity to voice their views on proposed changes, playing a significant role in enhancing the school environment.
Serving as a communication channel within the school organizsation, fostering connections between pupils, and facilitating communication between home and school.
Encouraging pupils to organise events at Kilsheelan NS and represent the school positively during these occasions.
Election Process: Annually, students from Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Class are invited to nominate themselves for a position on the Student Council at Kilsheelan NS. Before the election, nominees engage in canvassing and debates within their class. Each class conducts an election, resulting in two representatives from each class being selected along with four representatives from 6th Class, for the Student Council throughout the academic year. Elected pupils are expected to actively participate in council activities, attend regular meetings, and serve as role models for other students. Student Council Meetings: Members convene at regular intervals during the school year, with Mr Prendergast facilitating the meetings. Before each meeting, representatives gather ideas and suggestions from all classes to form the agenda. Mr Prendergast may also introduce topics for discussion or upcoming events. Beyond discussing matters, members are responsible for reporting meeting outcomes to other classes. Topics covered in Student Council meetings encompass:
